Program Description

The Hawaii Preceptorship Program offers an intensive 3-month clinical experience for participants ("preceptees") in primary care settings across Hawaii, primarily on Oahu, with potential rotations on the neighbor islands of Hawaii and Kauai. Opportunities to rotate in Endocrinology and Pediatrics are also available, providing a well-rounded clinical exposure.

Preceptees will engage in hands-on patient care under the supervision of board-certified physicians, including some faculty members from the University of Hawaii. Throughout the program, preceptees will enhance their clinical skills, with a focus on refining physical examination techniques and medical decision-making.

In addition to clinical rotations, preceptees will attend didactic lectures delivered by their preceptors and fellow participants, held multiple times a week. These sessions are designed to keep participants up to date with current medical knowledge and practices.

Based on performance, preceptees may become eligible for letters of recommendation (LORs) from their preceptors, though this is not guaranteed.

Furthermore, the program provides guidance on navigating the NRMP match process, crafting effective CVs and personal statements, and practicing for residency interviews.

The ultimate goal is to increase the likelihood of preceptees successfully matching into a U.S. residency program.
